Sufian Jusoh, LL.M
is a Barrister (England and Wales) and a Research Fellow with the NCCR Project at the WTI in Berne. He is based in Kuala Lumpur and Berne. Sufian has more than a decade's experience in legal practice. His areas of specialization are IP law, franchising, international environmental law and laws relating to technology. Sufian was the legal advisor to a Malaysian Government science park where he advised on technology and the law, venture capital investment and patents in agriculture biotechnology. Sufian was also the legal advisor to the Malaysian Malay Chamber of Commerce and Labuan Liberty Port in East Malaysia. He also advised various interest groups in the formulation of the Malaysian Long Term Plan 2000-2010. Sufian speaks Malay and English.

He now works as an independent legal researcher where he delivers well researched opinions and advice for solicitor firms and barrister's chambers in London and Scotland.His areas of specialisation are Intellectual Property Law, Franchising, International Environmental Law and International Economic Law.
From October 1998 to April 2002, Sufian practiced law in his own sole proprietorship in Kuala Lumpur where he practiced in shipping, information technology and intellectual property and franchising.Prior to that, from October 1993 to October 1998, he was a Legal Assistant with Skrine & Co, a leading legal firm in Malaysia. During this period he was also legal advisor to many organisations such as the Malaysian Franchise Association and the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce. He also advised the Malaysian Government on franchising and frequent speaker at franchise seminars and training programmes.He advised the Government of Malaysia on reforming franchise laws.In addition he advised several franchisors and franchisees and international companies in franchising.
Sufian graduated with LL.B (Hons) from Cardiff Law School, University of Wales in July 1991. Later he went to Lincoln's Inn where he qualified as a Barrister at Law in Trinity 1992 and called to the English Bar in November 1992. In December 1992, he joined Skrine & Co Kuala Lumpur as a pupil and was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in October 1993.
In November 2003, Sufian graduated from University College London with an LL.M (Merit) with specialisation in Environmental Law and Policy, Laws and Economics of Regulated Industry and International Comparative Law of Patents and Trade Secrets. Sufian's LL.M essays are ‘The Malaysian Franchise Act 1998: Do we need regulation' and ‘Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety 2000: Affirming the Precautionary Principle?'
Sufian is at present completing his doctorate at the World Trade Institute in Berne Switzerland (NCCR Research Fellow), specializing in international trade law with special interest in trade regulations in agricultural biotechnology and intellectual property especially patenting.
Sufian has two publications to his credit: (1) A book ‘Franchise Manual' (Lexis-Nexis:2003) and ‘Annotated Statutes of Malaysia: Franchise Act 1998 (Malayan Law Journal:2002).
